The unit was formed as the 351st SMW in February 1963 at Whiteman AFB, with the LGM-30B Minuteman I assigned from January 1964 until May 1966 when they were replaced by the LGM-30F Minuteman II. The unit was scheduled to inactivate during 1992, but this has been delayed until 1997.
